Learning time management skills will allow you to stay focused and get work done so you have more free time at the end of the day. Now that the majority of people work from a computer, there's an endless availability of distractions at your fingertips. Gaining control over your schedule and learning to prioritize tasks will make you more efficient and decrease the temptation of distractions.

1) Small Tasks First

Before you even sit down to work, make sure you've been to the bathroom, gotten coffee, and stretched. Anything that constantly sidetracks you from your work should be completed first to prevent your mind from wandering. When you take your next break, make sure you run through all those small tasks and distractions again.

2) Don't Check Emails and Messages

You read that right. Create a designated window to check and respond to messages twice a day. You do not need to check your email every ten minutes. Cutting back on sporadic emails and messages will allow you to focus on work throughout the day. When do you check your email, you will have a time frame to focus and reply, keeping you on schedule.

3) Block Social Media

Social media sites are not helpful to people prone to procrastination. You can pop in for a minute just to check, and suddenly you realize you were looking at funny videos of cats for over an hour. Consider blocking social media sites from your work computer so you can break the habit of checking your profile throughout the day.

4) To-Do List Apps

There's a plethora of to-do list apps available on your phone. Or if you prefer the old-fashioned way, simply keep an organized journal. Whenever a new task or responsibility comes in, add it to your list. Determine which tasks are most important and aim to complete them first. Add time estimates to your list so you have an outline to follow.

5) The Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique is a popular time management tool that is useful for staying on track during the workday. Typically, the method asks that you set a timer for 25 minutes and during that time you focus on work. Then you take a ten minute break to relax or drink some water. Working for 25 minutes is feasible because you are able to concentrate without staring at the clock and waiting for the hours to pass. Adapting a similar routine will improve your work ethic and help you avoid distractions.

Time management skills are the best way to improve productivity at work and anyone can learn them. Turn off social media during your work hours to break yourself of the habit of getting sidetracked. Schedule email checks and responses into your to-do list; avoid checking sporadically during the day in order to avoid wasting time. If you struggle to concentrate and stay focused, try utilizing the Pomodoro Technique so you work in short, efficient segments
